Hi, my name is Shirley. Nice to meet you! I’m from Taipei and I’m 35 this year. I am fluent in English, Chinese, and Japanese. I’ve been teaching for more than 10 years, and since receiving the Chinese teaching certificate from the Department of Education, I taught Chinese to more than 50 Japanese and American students, both in an one-on-one tutoring setting and in a group lesson/classroom setting. Since then, my class has earned the reputation of being fun and easy to understand. I’m grateful for all my students’ support in telling me how much they enjoy my class and making me one of the most popular teachers in the institute. I learned English when I was 16 as an international student in the States where I lived for 8 years. That experience allowed me to know what it feels like to learn a foreign language while being a foreigner, and all the insecurity and sense of inferiority that a student might feel when trying to learn a new language like Chinese. Therefore, I strive to be as encouraging, patient, and empathetic as a teacher can be. Not only as a teacher, but also as a friend and a cheerleader. If you get to know me, you’ll know that I am passionate, funny, and creative. I am especially passionate about teaching each student differently according to their personality, learning habit, country and cultural background, etc. In my perspective, every student is like a unique work of art and will only grow in a unique way. So my responsibility is to identify where the student is right now: their current level, strengths weaknesses, and what would their next step be. When I see a student’s progress and growth, however small it might be, it always gives me a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that words can’t describe. Sign up for my class!
